Your home should be a place where you feel safe. It’s a place where you gather with friends and family members after a long day at work or on special occasions, such as birthdays or holidays. When that safe haven has been disrupted, it can sometimes be hard to get the security back in place. These are some strategies that you can use to increase the security of your home and prevent burglary.

1. Install an alarm system – An alarm system is one of the most common methods used for increasing the security of your home. If you are not able to afford the cost of an alarm system, one trick you could use is placing a sign in the yard with the name of a security company so that it appears as though you have the system installed.

2. Keep mail collected – If a potential burglar sees that there is mail overflowing from the box, then they are more likely to rob that house because overflowing mail is a sign that nobody has been home for a few days.

3. Use smart lights – Smart apps will allow you to control the lights in your home even when you aren’t there. If you turn on the lights when you’re gone, it can make it seem like someone is at home. Make sure you have lights in all areas of the outside of the home that are motion sensitive as well.

4. Trim the shrubs – Making sure that the shrubs and grass around your house are taken care of also gives the look that someone has been home. If you’re away on vacation, consider hiring a gardener to do the job for you.

5. Keep a gun stored safely in your home – In the event that burglars do make it into your home, you want to be prepared. Many people store a gun in their home for safety. If you do have a gun in your home, make sure that it is stored safely with a gun alarm to prevent accidents from occurring.

6.  Smart home technology is fast becoming the norm for controlling lights, heating and air conditioning, security and entertainment.  One can control all home electronics from a smart phone or tablet.  Often, placing a dedicated tablet in a common area of the house, accessible to everyone in the home is a great way to provide control and access.
