Set Your Gardening Goals

Posted on 04. Jun, 2015 by in Construction, DIY, Gardening, Home Improvement

What kind of garden do you want in your yard? Have you always dreamed of growing your own vegetables? Maybe you are more drawn to flowers, and yearn to plant and tend a colorful garden full of blossoms. Once you set your goals, you can plan to plant, tend, and grow abundance in your yard.

Vegetables

No matter how much space you have, you can grow enough vegetables to feed your family. Even if you just have a patio, growing fresh produce is possible. You can grow salad greens, beans, squash, peppers, eggplant, and green onions in:

  • Raised garden beds
  • A small or large plot in your yard
  • Pots and barrels

Flowers

When you grow your own flowers, not only will your front and backyard be beautiful; you can have your own source for cut fresh blooms to bring into your house regularly. Fresh-cut flowers in a vase can create a nurturing ambiance in your home. Consider growing:

  • Perennials: Daisies, sunflowers, peonies, hollyhocks, and coneflowers
  • Annuals: Zinnias, marigolds, and geraniums
  • Flowering shrubs and bushes: Hydrangea, roses, and lilacs

Herbs

Once you have cooked with fresh herbs, you will have a hard time using store-bought spices. Not only are homegrown herbs delicious to cook with, they are lovely to look at, and they smell great, too. In window boxes, in potted containers, and as borders in your yard, try planting:

  • Sage
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Cilantro

Other Gardening Perks

It is great to harvest vegetables, flowers, and herbs from your very own garden, but gardening has other perks, such as:

  • Stress relief: Gardening can relieve stress. Being surrounded by nature and watching plants grow is a rewarding, peaceful activity.
  • Community: Gardeners love to share seeds, veggies, and tips, so it is only natural that supportive communities grow along with gardens.
  • Compost bin: When you create a compost area, you can recycle weeds, table scraps, and grass clippings, plus have an organic fertilizer. This is a win-win perk.

If you have always wanted to grow a garden in your yard, now is the time to get planting. Decide your goals, buy the seeds, and get ready to watch your plants grow.
