Roof Repair | The Telltale Signs You Need it

Posted on 02. Jan, 2014 by in Home Improvement, Roofing

There are a number of things can damage your roof. Most people know that heavy winds and strong storms are major culprits when it comes to tearing shingles and causing cracks. However, simple sunshine and extreme heat or cold can also cause damage over time. Are you in need of roof repair? Pay attention to the signs that indicate you should call a contractor.

A simple visual inspection can usually tell you enough about the condition of your roof. For example, if you notice that you have loose or missing shingles, your roof will be more susceptible to damage. Everything from the wind to simply old age can cause your shingles to loosen and become worn. You might also see either loose or exposed nails, which are major red flags. While nails are small, they do a big job of protecting your home from seeping water. A loose or exposed nail means water can flow beneath the nail head and cause damage to your home.

Stand back from your home and take a look at your roof. Do you notice any dips or sags? This can indicate problems with the roof structure as a result of excessive weight from extra shingles or moisture. Sagging is a definite sign that you will be in need of roof repair or replacement.

Some signs are not as obvious. For example, if you notice major changes in your heating and cooling bills, it may be because your chief insulator – the roof – is not working properly. A leak in your roof can allow cool air into your home during winter, causing you to turn up the thermostat. Conversely, if your home is not cooling properly in the summer, it may be because of a leak that causes your air conditioner to work harder.

Lastly, any signs of interior water damage indicate you should contact a roof repair company. If you notice stains on your ceiling or walls, it can be a symptom that you have roof damage. A specialist is best equipped to inspect the problem and offer a solution.
