Reasons NOT to have a house cleaner

Reasons NOT to have a house cleaner2It’s everybody’s dream isn’t it? To have someone else come in daily or weekly and take care of all the annoying, boring, yucky, dirty jobs that are a necessary part of life. The ones that leave you groaning at the weekend. Imagine the luxury of leaving your wreck of a home in the morning and returning to a spotless, gleaming house as if by magic. It sounds perfect, right? Well, think again. Hiring a cleaning lady is not the amazing solution that it’s made out to be and we’ll tell you why.

First of all it has to be the cost issue. Unless you are mega-wealthy then taking money to pay someone to do your cleaning will be felt elsewhere. Taking care of your own household chores means more dollars for shoes and holidays. It’s far more enjoyable to have an extra night abroad than it is to have immaculately clean silverware. It’s a question of priorities, but when you’re considering those you should also bear in mind how important it is to look at the bigger picture. Life is short and experiences are everything.

Having a cleaner sounds a good idea, right? Well, think about it in real terms. He/she may be there to do the jobs you hate, but that’s another person in your home, regular as clockwork, whether you like it or not. If you’ve been up all night with a teething baby and haven’t washed your hair for three days – your cleaner is still going to show up and see you. If you have flu and feel like death and just want to lie in bed, imagine having a stranger vacuuming around you as you lie there. Maybe your boyfriend just dumped you and you want to sob for a week – yet again, your cleaner will be there to witness it all. Only in the background of course, but it’s important not to underestimate the impact of having someone you don’t know in your house.Reasons NOT to have a house cleaner

The next factor to consider is an uncomfortable one because no-one likes to think badly of anyone they don’t know. But the fact of the matter is that people can be dishonest, and one of the easiest ways to get your most precious jewellery stolen is to unwittingly bring a dishonest person into your home. When you consider that your choice is between running a vacuum cleaner around occasionally and being the victim of theft, the answer is a starkly obvious one. That said, the way to reduce the risk of this if you DO decide that you need a cleaner is to seek as many references as possible. Which leads on nicely to the next point – finding a good, reliable cleaner is not easy. If you want a personal touch then avoid agencies and the best way to do it otherwise is by word of mouth. If a friend recommends a cleaner then you can be almost certain that he/she can be trusted.

Possibly the most compelling reason not to have a cleaner is that cleaning your house can be fun! Not only that but it’s a great way to burn calories. By cleaning a bathroom you earn yourself a chocolate biscuit. If you have children, it’s time to get them involved and help you – this quickly morphs into quality time with the little ones. And you can do your cleaning when it suits, you won’t find yourself having to dash around at 7am on a Monday morning clearing surfaces and putting toys away so that the cleaner can do his/her job.
