Plumbing issues can seem frightening at first, but knowing a few simple tricks will save you a little money and a lot of grief.

Cleaning Clogged Drains

Undoubtedly, one of the most common problems in household plumbing is clearing out clogged drains. Whether it is the sink, toilet, or tub, there are some clogs that are easily fixed. In the case of the toilet, it is important to know how to shut off the refilling mechanism to prevent overflow. Most household toilets are easily shut off by removing the tank cover and lifting the the lever found inside. Once you have any running water turned off, you can begin working on the drain. A simple plunger is an essential tool to have when dealing with plumbing issues, and it can clear recently made drain clogs with ease. If you have been plunging away at your drain for several minutes and there is no improvement, it may be time to call a professional.

Cementing Loose Pipes

Another easy fix when dealing with home plumbing issues is cementing together loose piping. If you have a known leak, you may be able to fix it by simply screwing the pipes together firmly or using plumber’s cement to make sure the seal is watertight. Always turn off your water before attempting to work directly with your pipes, otherwise you could find yourself under a spray of water. By being brave and tackling the simplest plumbing emergencies, you can solve your most immediate plumbing disasters or know if you should call in a professional.
