Home Advancement Trends

Posted on 19. Aug, 2013 by in Home Improvement

Today’s home advancements reflect changing attitudes towards the environment and our increasingly busy lifestyles.  Going “green” is a major trend due to concerns about greenhouse gases and global warming, as well as a desire to reduce utility bills.  There are growing numbers of contractors who specialize in building green housing, using recycled materials and incorporating energy-efficient features such as solar panels, rainwater collection systems, and energy-saving appliances.  Many states and cities offer incentive programs, giving rebates to homeowners who make their home more energy efficient.  Such rebate programs may save thousands of dollars towards new air conditioning units or insulation, for example.

With our increasingly busy lifestyles, more homeowners are looking for low-maintenance housing.  Instead of having a great expanse of lawn which requires major upkeep, people are turning to smaller yards with less manicured lawns and more low-maintenance plants or groundcovers.  A popular type of landscaping, known as xeriscaping, uses drought-tolerant plants and natural hardscape materials such as pebbles, rocks, and ground covers instead of grass.

Another trend is for housing constructed with durable and low-maintenance materials that can reduce the need for repairs.  As a result, wood is being less frequently, with more people opting for synthetics such as vinyl siding or composite decking that do not require as much upkeep.  As far as home advancements inside the home, the trend of open and free-flowing spaces continues to grow in popularity.  Gone are the days of separate living spaces and rarely used formal living and dining rooms.  Reflecting the need for connection, many homes incorporate the kitchen, dining, and living spaces into one living space, making it the ideal gathering place for family members at the end of a busy and hectic day.

I am sad that there is an increasing trend toward synthetic materials. Natural materials, while they can be a bit more high maintenance just add a beautiful element to any home.
