Do you live in an area that has earthquakes? It is possible that you have never had to prepare for an earthquake before, but there are important steps that you and your family can take to be ready if an earthquake happens in your area.

Create Your Emergency Exit Plan

If there is a severe earthquake, you home might not be safe to be inside. Your plan should start by making sure that everybody in the family understands that if an earthquake should happen, everyone should immediately get themselves under a door frame and away from objects or furniture that could fall and hurt them. Earthquakes can cause your home to be structurally unsafe, so make sure that you have a clearly defined emergency exit plan that all of your family knows. A great idea that some families have is a diagram on their fridge to remind everybody of how to best exit the home and end up in the same place. Make sure that you meeting place is away from power or gas lines as these can be damaged and unsafe after an earthquake.

Have Flashlights and Emergency Supplies Close at Hand

Designate areas in your home where you have flashlights, warm weather clothing, some food, and extra shoes. Put these items in a backpack so that you can grab it quickly if you need to exit your home. If an earthquake happens in the middle of the night and the power goes out, you will be grateful that there is an easily accessible flashlight for your safety.

Have Food and Water Storage

A severe earthquake can lead to disruption in power, gas, and water. You will need to make sure that you have at least a week supply of food and water for your whole family. Buy some of the large packs of bottled water every time you go shopping and you will quickly have a supply of drinking water. Select food that can be easily prepared with a barbeque or with whatever heat source you will have available.

With a little preparation, you can rest assured that you and your family will be protected in the unexpected event of an earthquake.
