Posted on 27. Aug, 2013 by in Home Improvement

Do you ever feel that there simply isn’t enough space in your home to keep all of your things in check? Have you got a nice house that’s big enough to live in but just isn’t tidy enough for your liking? Well don’t fret – floating shelves are here to save the day! Floating shelves are an innovative 21st century design idea that is clean, contemporary and classy, not to mention practical above all else!

Floating shelves – what are they?

Floating shelves, as the name suggests, appear as one with the wall due to the fact that there are no visible brackets attached supporting the shelf and everything placed upon it like traditional shelves. Designed to fit into the minimalist decor theme, floating shelves hide the supporting brackets (and retaining screws) within the shelf so it cannot be seen.

So how can floating shelves be used in the home?

The great thing about floating shelves is that they can be installed anywhere in the home, as long as there is a wall to fix them (and their bracket) to.

Floating shelves can be used:

  • In the kitchen to store food and drink, cutlery, pots and pans and kitchenware including plates, cups, bowls and so on
  • In the bathroom to store toiletries, shower products, cleaning products, spare toilet roll, towels and much more
  • In the lounge to store trophies and memorabilia, candles and special photographs
  • In the bedroom to store photographs, candles, a clock, books, CDs and DVDs
  • In the garage to store tools, tins of paint, spare car parts and products, gardening equipment, food stuffs and bottles of alcohol.

So how do they work?

Typically, floating shelves will have at least two symmetrical channels which brackets slide into so they can be attached to the wall. Screws are then inserted through the bottom of the shelf to hold it on the brackets reducing any chance of movement occurring greatly.

Floating shelves can be made from a range of lightweight materials from particle board and laminated to MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard).

Best of all, floating shelves are incredibly easy to install, even for people who don’t often undertake DIY jobs. To install them, all you will need is:

  • A tape measure
  • A stud locator
  • A spirit level
  • Some basic carpenter’s glue (optional depending on the bracket you will be using for your floating shelves)

Floating shelves usually come with three different types of wall fixing depending on the walls in your home: standard screw type brackets, plaster board brackets and re-bar brackets.

The weight that the floating shelves can take is impacted directly by the type of wall fixing that they utilize. Floating shelves can often take as much weight as 30kg although models that use the re-bar bracketing system usually are able to take much greater loads than any other bracket (as much as 50kg for example).

Regardless of your individual space requirements, you’ll always find floating shelves that are perfect for your home!
