A heavy snowfall can be an unwelcome surprise for homeowners who are unprepared or do not have the necessary supplies for preparation and cleanup. Be prepared ahead of time with these four quick tips to get a home for snow and get ready to deal with the chilly aftermath.

  1. Prevent ice dams in gutters and on roofs. To stop ice dams from forming, homeowners can clear the roof after major snowstorms by raking it or paying a business to remove the snow and ice. Another alternative is to invest in deicing cables, which are heated wires on a roof to melt the snow.
  2. Winterize pipes and sprinklers. Wrap pipes to stop them from freezing, particularly in unused areas such as attics and crawlspaces. There are a variety of products that can accomplish the job, such as fiberglass insulation, heating tape, and foam rubber sleeves. Make sure to seal any exposures in the home that might allow cold air in, including drafty windows or gaps in the wall.
  3. Insulate your garage. In garages not finished with insulation and drywall, the temperature can drop below freezing. If the garage is used as a workspace, storage, or laundry room, it is essential to keep it warm. The best way to prevent the garage from freezing is to insulate and drywall it.
  4. Cover flowers and plants. Covering up flowers, plants, and bushes before winter hits can protect them from wind damage and freezing temperatures and help prevent the roots from freezing. Laying down mulch can also act as a protection from snow.

Even though it may still feel like fall, it is never too soon to begin thinking about preparing a home for the first snow of the season. Ice and snow can devastate pipes, backyards, and roofs, and can create unsafe situations that can cause injuries to family and friends.
